I'm bidding a job for a Portable Generator hookup. Probably 60 KW. Mounted on a trailer.
This Gen will be moved to different locations on this Horse Farm, and also used for irrigation, and other various needs.
To power the main house,
I'm planning on installing a service rated, 400 amp manual transfer switch on the residence.
What I'm looking for, is a separate 3R inclosure that the Owner can wire into...I know they won't call an EC every time the power goes out, & I don't want to see them opening up an energized transfer switch to hook it up.
With this inclosure, I plan to extend the Gen connections, outside of the transfer switch.
I thought someone else may have run across this situation before, & found something that made a nice install.
Just looking to make it as safe as possible! Thanks in advance.

Re: Gen Hookup

Have you thought about a permanent cable harness that the homeowner could lay out to the generator and make his connections to the generator and not the other way around? The open ends of the cables would never be energized until fastened to the generator terminals. The cable could be left coiled up and may not need a NEMA 3R enclosure.
Just a thought.

Re: Gen Hookup

I would probably buy a NEMA 3R hinged cover box and install Cam-locs (single pole connectors) inlets in it.

Here is a pdf file with the connector info.

Hubbell Single Pole Connectors

These connectors combined with the proper portable power cable would allow the owner to move it around to supply different loads.

Re: Gen Hookup

Thanks Guys I'll look into both scenarios.
As for now the AHJ hasn't said He would approve anything like this yet...I think I caught Him off guard, & He's researching the options.
I case anyone wonders what a 400 amp Manual transfer switch, rated for use as service equipment costs $6500.00
I guess We'll see how serious the Horse people are now !!

Re: Gen Hookup

Well I got My answer from the AHJ today...He said to mount the Transfer switch, & let the farm owner wire it in directly when He wanted to use the Generator.
He will write up the inspection for "Transfer Switch only" "Generator hookup not included"
Don't really agree, but makes My job easier !

Re: Gen Hookup

I would tell the owner about the hubbel connectors and see if they want them. They look like a great solution. I have the same situation here on our farm. don't know if they would be any cheaper or different, but these type connectors are commonly used in welding leads of arc welders.

Re: Gen Hookup

forgot to say you should see if the generator is available with a plug connection. Most of the PTO units I see are available with a proprietary male connector that is wired to the transfer switch and plugs into a receptacle on the generator. They might want to consider a pto unit anyway if they have a tractor available.
