Generac 1000 amp or 600 amp?

I have a transfer switch with what looks to be a 1000 amp switch mechanism but a nameplate that says it's only 600 amps. Any ideas what's going on here?

The internal switch mechanism (contactor) is a 1000 amp part. But the whole switch as an assy is only rated 600 amps. Perhaps they had a 1000 amp contactor and no 600 when a customer placed an order. This happens with generators all the time. Some component will be rather oversize because it is what was in stock at the factory at the time.
