Any suggestions on connecting main panel to automatic transfer switch, without going behind the meter?

What do you mean by "going behind the meter? Is it a meter/main?

Then you will have to add the ATS between the meter/main and the panel. That or add a panel for the backed up loads. You can't do a meter/main like just a regular meter because you can't modify the meter/main. If the ATS is service rated you will have to remove the bonding jumper in there as the bonding is already done in the meter/main. If the meter/main is existing, the inside panel (if there is one) should already be treated as a subpanel.
