I live outside of Chicago and all homes have to be 100 percent in conduit. I am installing a 14 circuit 17kw generator in a customers home. I have many conduits which have two hots sharing a neutral wire. If I want to bring one of the hot circuits over from the main panel to the transfer/sub panel, do I have to bring the other?

I have been told that I do have to bring both hots over. My customer does not want the other circuit on the transfer switch/sub panel.

Any help would be great, thanks.

You have multiwire branch circuits and yes you would have to move both hots or rewire with another neutral.

210.4 Multiwire Branch Circuits.

(A) General. Branch circuits recognized by this article shall be permitted as multiwire circuits. A multiwire circuit shall be permitted to be considered as multiple circuits. All conductors of a multiwire branch circuit shall originate from the same panelboard or similar distribution equip-ment.
