General Electrical wiring Issue

We have a situation where my electrician is telling me on one of the repair jobs he has a situtaion where two low voltage transformers rated for 300W at 120V/12VAC feeding same number of low voltage ligts for each transformer, he noticed that the lights had a seperate hot wire from each transformer to the lights also seperate neutral wire from each transformer however all the neutral wires connected together with a wire nut he took the load reading on one it showed 22.5 amps and the other was reading 17.3 amps however when he seperated the neutrals for both transformers, transformer which was reading 22.3 amps previously went down to 16.5 amps and the transfomer reading 17.3 amps previously went upto to 20.3 amps. Can anyone explain what happened here?

If he took the amp readings on the hot wires, combining or separating the neutrals shouldn't make any difference.

Are the transformer secondaries grounded? If so, the transformer neutrals should probably be kept separate to keep from forming any parallel paths on the ground wires.
