General generator 15 kw blow to top off tha onboard battery

I have a 15 kw generac generator that is connected to my house via transfer switch it did not come on for its weekly exercise cycle when I checked as to why the top of the onboard battery was blown off this also happened spout 5 years ago what could cause this and how do I fix it
