Article 100 of the NEC has the following definition for a General Use Switch:
Switch, General-Use. A switch intended for use in general distribution and branch circuits. It is rated in amperes, and it is capable of interrupting its rated current at its rated voltage.
Can someone give me an example of a general use switch? It suspect I am overlooking the obvious...

I agree with Hurk, any type of wall switch, or snap switch variations. Think of the bins at Home Depot.

There is a definition for a general use snap switch, its as you describe. Thats why I am curious as to what a general use switch is.
A general use snap switch is designed to mount on a device box.

Re: General Use Switch?

Look at 404.13(C) General use switch seems to mean a knife (disconnect) switch rated less then 1200 amps at 250 volt or less then 600 amps at 251 to 600 volts

They talk about snap switches in 404.14
