Generator bonding

When using a backup generator to power a residence, I understand that the generator must be unbonded. I am trying to figure out an easy way to do this without taking the generator apart. What would happen if the ground of the four wire plug was not connected in the house panel? Would this then require a seperate ground rod placed for the generator?

Removing the bond doesn't have to mean taking the generator apart. Many portable generators are made without a factory installed bond, others come with a switch and still others do not present a difficult chore to remove the bond.

Most of the time there is a rubber cord connecting the generator to the transfer switch so the net effect is no different if there is an EGC connected or not. A ground rod has no effect on anything.
