Generator Clearances

I have a 60KW natural gas generator that I will be installing within a generator room in a pump station. I have plenty of clearence in the front of the generator but I will only have 2'-4" of clearence on either side of the generator. I have asked for 3 feet of clearence around the generator but I was told that if it is not a code issue then they do not want to enlarge the room.

Anyone know if this is a code issue?

I once installed a genny for a customer who wanted it close to the house, because it was in the side yard. The mechanical inspector failed it for being too close to the wall of the house. Naturally, I climbed up the food chain.

The county requirement was to follow the manufacturer's requirements, which were to follow local requirements. Since there were no vent louvers on the back of the enclosure, I got them to pass it with about 6" clearance.

We did a residential generator install on some guy's house; he originally wanted it in the flowerbed on the side of the building, kind of obscured by some shrubs and such. We told him it was probably a bad idea. He didn't like our declaration. The local fire marshal or someone of similar stature wound up coming out.

Long story short, the generator is now smack dab in the middle of his front yard, free from anything combustible (except his lawn) for a 10 foot radius.

I was a first term apprentice when this happened so I wasn't really aware of the significance of all these things back then. It was a small generator and 10 feet seems like overkill in hindsight. Maybe he mad someone angry...
