Hi,

having seen many genset installations over the years, I came across a strange day tank configoration in a cummins genset. the day tank is located beneth the engine!

I always understood the purpose of the day tank to maintain the prime in the local fuel lines, provide a break tank in the fuel delivery system.

anyone know why it would be located beneth the engine?

regards,
Ross

I was always told that day tanks were a way of dealing with indoor fuel storage issues. Supposedly, there was (or is) an issue with the quantity of fuel that can be stored inside a building. So, with a small day tank, the fuel storage quantity is within legal limits and a jockey pump connected to a float switch in the tank keeps the tank full by pumping fuel from a large outdoor storage tank. Most day-tanks I have seen do not hold more than about 2 hours worth of fuel!

It's important that the pump be primed. The pump is probably at the level of the tank. If a line breaks between tank and engine connections, the lower tank will prevent spillage.

The fuel tank in your truck is lower than your engine. No problem.

Its the newer skid mounted belly tank that they are pushing nowadays.
Its an alternative to having a free standing day tank as a separate piece of equipment.

We have two gens in our facilty, 250kw & 200kw. Day tanks are mounted between the frame rails, beneath the engine. they came that way from the factory. I thought most of them were mounted that way. Saves a lot of space for sure. Anyway, we never have a fuel pickup problem.
