I am using a 18 hp generator with a 10kw alterntor as power for a school. What is the actual power generation of the motor taking into account the power lose of the motor? Is the generator producing the 10kw of power instead of 13.4 kw of power?
Generator is producing 10 kW max, engine has some extra capability if the 18hp rating is at the same rpm as the generator. I would say the engine was having to produce 10kW + some small amount of "windage" plus heat losses in the generator. If generator is like a motor, over-all efficiency could range around 90%.
