We are installing diesel generators with base fuel tanks in cell type sites and the question came up about the fuel tank.

Is there a code requirement that requires the vent to be piped to the outside?
Also the same question for the fuel fill.

I know it is a good idea, but is it a code requirement?

This is for MA.

They are putting a lot of large generators around here too. I talked one customer into installing Natural Gas. Unlimited fuel, no fuel storage problems, no venting questions, no EPA site problems. It's what AT&T are installing around here too.

Is the generator for short power outages or disaster?
I was wondering if gas is still working in a disaster?

We vent all of ours. It's in an NFPA document on fuel storage but I can't remember
which one right now.
Fuel fill I'm pretty sure is not required to be accesible from outside. But the tanks have to pass a pressure test.

Doesnt matter. If NG goes out then so is everything else and its bug out time. Pipes have to be kept filled or else they have to be vented. Very expensive and if I have to rely on something not going out Im going to bet on NG.
