7kw thru 18kw guardian generac gen. sets. my question is how do others
move these around on installs, how many guys used on install, etc.just looking
for tips to make me more efficent. right now i load them on a 4 wheel cart and pull it up to site of install 4 of us lift off set in place the 2 others then go
onto the next job. thanx mark

I roll them around on skates, and get them on and off the skates with a digging iron and a block of wood. The generators of the size you describe can be a one-man job with skates and a digging iron.

from 11 kw to 1200 kw we have set with less than four men.. we always have the proper rigging to set equipment in place without double handling it also. i always arrange delivery on my terms when ordering the equipment. half the time it's on overtime due to traffic conditions. we have rented tow trucks at times--depends what the site conditions are. two rules we had, nobody gets hurt and don't damage the generator. one small 15 kw gas unit had to go over a chill water line --- we rented an engine hoist to lift it over.........

Keep the carts, I want those straight forward job site installs. I want to see that "one-man crews" hump one of those things through trees and backyard fences, etc. We have grown cautious whenever our salesman says he has a "vanilla" install lined up. Most of them turn out to be "death by chocolate." :)

If it is an air-cooled, it is usually 4 men and 2 long bars. 60%(+/-) of the generators go on some sort of platform. If we get lucky we can back a truck right to it and then it is just a foot or so up or down. On occasion we will have to lift to a 6' platform. Those are the tough ones. If we can't get close enough than we call in the crane. Anything over air-cooled is a crane. We will, on occasion, if the generator is in a building, have to set in place on rollers once the crane sets it down on site. On of the most fun was a 300kw inside a blower building at a WWTP.

the air cooled 17kw generacs I have delivered to the house, and than set it in place with a tractor with bucket w/ forks.

You must do a lot of natural gas setups, here in propane country we call 'em 18kws.

We are a generac dealer

We are a generac dealer

Option one: 4 guys 4 hrs to set 20 kw or less
Option two: Drive ups? We hire a tow truck to lift and place on platform
Option three: We have a lift company come in to figure it out and charge the appropriate charge.

Works everytime.

We also request a drop gate for delivery from Generac and pay a fee for it.

I know this is kind of off topic, but do you guys sell gensets on a regular basis? I was contacted by generac, and havn't had time to respond to them. Do they sell the gens, then schedule your company to install, or do you have to go out and sell them yourself? Just curious how it works, and would like to add another marketing strategy.

We are an authorized Generac dealer. It is a little frustrating that Generac contacts anybody they can get ahold of (no offense intended) to sell their machines. You have the right to sell just like we do, and I hope if you do that you do well. It is the largest part of our company business. The grief on our end is that there does not seem to be much manufacturer loyalty to the ones that bother to get certified and trained. We get a lot of calls from customers that had one installed and then can not get adjustments right and then we get stuck with warranty work, which means virtually no money. Generac does not care if they sell 100 units through one dealer or 100. That is when it starts to hurt on the dealer's profit margin. Check out the market and give it a go. It can do very well for you.

I think it should be more like the warranty covers X amount and the customer should pay the difference between what you would normally charge and what Generac pays. Just like when you visit a doctor.
