I have a customer that wants to hookup a backfeed 4500 watt generator to a panel with a manual transfer switch. What I am wondering since the generator only puts out a 30 amp 120 volt service is it legal to back feed a 120 volt service and to feed the panel with only 120 volt and the loads she wants to connect she just wants to feed the sump pump and refrigerator.

Any help would be appreciated.

If she only wants to connect to limited loads, why not use one of those circuit-specific transfer switch assemblies? Or mount a small sub-panel with dual-fed interlocking breakers?

You could do manual load shed but if it's a 120/240V panel then you better make sure the loads you are serving are on the same phase and that the transfer switch disconnects both lines from the utility.

If you don't turn off other loads the generator will go into load rejection and shutdown.

kbsparky has the right solution.
