Generator in Grammer School or High School

Is an emergency generator required in new school installations such as grammer or high school?. If so, where can I find more of its requirements, i.e. time of fuel, length of time, etc. Is it different from State to State? These are regular schools (not special ones such as serving the blind, etc.)

The rules for Emergency power systems are addressed in article 700. Look at the first sentence of the second paragraph of 700.1. While you are at it, look at the first sentence of 701.2, under ?Legally Required Standby Systems.? You will see that the NEC rules for installing such systems require first that some governmental agency make a declaration that such and such a load shall be treated as ?emergency,? or that it shall be treated as a ?legally required? load. The place where such declarations take place is generally the building codes. The NEC itself will not tell you if a school has to have a backup power generator.

I agree with Charlie, also to answer part of your question, it does veriy from state to state. Here in CA we do not have jurisdiction over schools, they are inspected by the state, OSHPOD I believe.
