Generator main Disconnect NECA 406-900

NECA 406-900 deals with the installation of residential generators.

My question is :

If the installation is for a permanetly connected Generator set, and the generator has a main disconnect switch inside the generator cabinet, is this disconnect suitable as use for a main disconnect between generator and transfer switch.

or do i have to install a second main disconnect between the generator and transfer switch

Please advise

Yes and No. Is the disconect "inside the cabinet" readily accessable?

The Disconnect is located inside the generator cabinet and is easily accessible when opening the generator enclosure top cover. It is clearly labelled and easily accessed when the top cover is opened.

The Generator is a Coleman Powerstation 10KW, and there is a 11.5KW model as well..

Are both the generator and the transfer switch located outdoors? What is the distance between them and the house? Also, is this a design you are performing for a client, or is this for your own home?

My thoughts are if something goes wrong and I have to go through the trouble of taking a cover off to disconect power to the transfer switch, the trouble may be a lot worse.

according to 445.18 (1) nec you can use the gas or a fuel shut off valve as a disconnecting means for the generator.


445.18 Disconnecting Means Required for Generators.
Generators shall be equipped with a disconnect by means of which the generator and all protective devices and control apparatus are able to be disconnected entirely from the circuits supplied by the generator except where:
(1) The driving means for the generator can be readily shut down; and
(2) The generator is not arranged to operate in parallel with another generator or other source of voltage.
