Generator maintenance

Hi guys i got a call today for a price on maintaining to generators. One is a kohler the other is a generac i believe. Does anyone have a maintenece agreement they could share. Or better yet give me some advice. I am a new electrical contractor and i don't want to give business away. Even if i don't have a clue.:confused:
 
In order to be able toproperly service Guardian/Generac, you will have to give them some money and become a dealer.
This will give you access to tech help as well as repair parts, warranty payments, etc.
I don't know what the requirements are for Kohler
I would recommend that if you really want to do generator maintenance, you find some factory authorized classes in your area, attend them, and gain some knowledge about their products and how to service them.
 
Our maintenance agreements are based on generator size and distance from the shop. A 16kw within 20 miles of the shop is going to cost less than a 40kw 50 miles away. I may be stating the obvious, but I had to throw it out there. The other question I have for you is what kind of generator background do you have? Are you a dealer for a particular MFG? I ask because you will have to deal with the components and systems that fail and the other guys in our shop can fix them far faster than I can when our maint. goes beyond the routine. You may be well versed in schematics and troubleshooting, and if so, you have a good step in the right direction. Your costs are going to be based on the same criteria as most any other job...distance traveled, routine materials needed, expected time per unit, etc.

What size are they? and how much are they used? There will be a couple of levels of maintenance....One being a "operational" maintenance interval, which would check fluid levels, battery, document instrumentation, start it, pick up the load, shed the load, and return it back to stand by.

The more intense level would be more toward winding (stator,rotor) and bearings maintenance and engine maintenance. There are probably some NETA guys on this forum that can help you with that if needed.
 
My generator contracts are based upon having diesel mechanics working for me. Should we do plumbing because a customer has a hot water heater connected to the electrical system. Really stick with you know or have technicians that can professionally do the work.
 
Trovmar, I operate very near your area. We don't do generator maintenance, for the same reasons detailed in this thread. But there is a company that I work with extensively on these things. We can surely help you out. Send me a PM if you're willing to pass the lead along.
