Hello, I’m sure this question has been posted numerous times without me reading through all of the threads. Maybe I can have it answered, I have a bonded generator backfeeding through a breaker in a sub panel in garage, of course the main breaker on the main panel is shut off. The generators outlets are GFCI protected and they would trip as soon as I flipped the generator breaker. So what I did is unbond the generator neutral wire from the frame. It runs fine now, but is this safe and how does the power flow back to the source, what is the correct way here? And do I need to run a separate ground rod for the generator? It’s a 30 amp twist loc plug on a 5000 watt Honda inverter generator.

Welcome to the forum.

I am loathe to answer because you apparently do not have an interlock.

You can not have an interlock between the main breaker and the sub-panel.
