We hat are you trying to protect? The genset or cable? iOS the genset even capable of tripping an OCPD?
Also, I am assuming that you are referring to am ASCO contactor type ATS. There is also the breaker type ATS as available from Eaton.

I believe you need a disconnect so the generator does not send power to the transfer switch when the systemis being worked on

A disconnect is not needed for that reason but I do believe OCP is required to protect the ATS.

Sorry when I said disconnect I meant with overcurrent protective device since hat was what the op asked... Thanks for clarifying tho
