I am looking at a generator installation that will be installed on the roof of a four story building. The support structure was installed when the building was built. The generator ATS is specified to have a switched neutral which would be a seperately derived system. With that being the case we would need to connect the generator to a grounding electrode. The building steel is connected to an exterior ground ring that loops around the exterior of the building underground. All of the vertical columns are connected to this ground ring. The main service is connected to this ground ring.
My question is would the building steel be considered a grounding electrode in which we could connect to in the fourth floor ceiling or would we need to go all the way down to the first floor main grounding buss.
