i've got a few... i'm at the design stage for three whole house generators.

everyone wants these, it seems... they are the new status symbol around
here.... i'm good with that...

i'm looking for the quietest units available.... 1800 rpm versus 3600 rpm
is preferable.... who has installed stuff you are impressed with?

in one case, the customer is looking for dual fuel, NG and propane. is there
anything on the market that does that, that you'd recommend?

the panels in each case are 200 A.

recommendations on automatic transfer switches.... in two of the cases,
i'm looking at going out the back of the service into the garage, and putting
the transfer switch there....

and the last fugly part, shedding loads... i'll want to drop the two A/C's,
the pool heater, but i suspect they are gonna want to keep everything else
alive.... what's the best way to accomplish the load shedding other than setting
a subpanel and moving conductors... that can be done, but is there a better
solution?

i can put ice cube relays to interrupt the a/c compressors from starting, and
the same with the pool heater.... what about other loads? suggestions?

thanks for the help...

hm. well, a little bit of surfing.....

Generac QuietSource Series? 27 kW Standby Power Generator (Premium-Grade)

Generac Nexus Smart Switch? - 200 Amp Automatic Transfer Switch (Service Entrance)

the switch has load shedding and load rotating modules... so that solves that problem....
and it's carb approved....

and the pair of them, with some little widgits and stuff is gonna probably be $11,500..

any suggestions on anything quieter? this one is liquid cooled and 1800 rpm, so i suspect
this is about as good as it gets?

I agree, we have some of the 25Kw units that run at 1800 and you have to get with in 8-10 ft to hear them running. Just remember if you go with a 27Kw duel fuel that Kw rating will be about 25Kw on natural gas so your load calculation should be based on the lower Kw.

I'm not sure if this affects you in any way but I've seen these information labels on several units that I've installed and it's in the Generac owner's manual :

CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65 WARNING
Engine exhaust and some of its constituents are known
to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects
and other reproductive harm.

CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65 WARNING

Does this restrict you from installing these units in any way ?

only in a closed garage...... ;-)

california passed this bit of idiocy about you being properly notified
of everything, so you can't sue the state cause your life happened.

a collage of californication:

"the coffee you are about to enjoy is very hot"
"cigarettes may cause cancer"
"objects in this mirror are closer than they appear"
"california legislators may be idiots"

As far as load shedding there are options.

You can purchase more complicated transfer equipment that has these features built in, a convenience of them is they will allow the specific load to operate if the demand of the system is low enough to allow it to run.

Many simple transfer switches either have or will accept aux contacts that can be used to control desired loads you wish to shed.

You also could probably just connect control relays to the generator output and control the desired load anytime there is voltage on the generator output. Keep in mind this will turn off the controlled loads when generator is running even if there is no transfer, like when the genset does its periodic excersizing.

Randy,
Look up the specs on this unit. Its a small company in Indiana, Great service, Great prices, And use all american parts. (GM motors, John Deere motors, Marathon generators). I am waiting on delivery of one of their units now. Thier specs are actually better than most units out there. This one was 68 DB at full load.

you installing that thing in socalif? might it be possible to take a peek at it when it arrives?
it looks like it was designed by engineers rather than salesmen...... shoot me a PM if that works for you....

thanks for the info...
