A customer wants to run a machine shop at his residence from a welder generator. This will generate 3 ph 480v 30amps, and 120/240v single phase 30amps. Their will be no electrical service to this detached garage.

The plan is to set this generator on a pad 2 ft from the outside of the building. Use 2 seperate twist lock cords...one from 480v and the other from the 240v. I would use so cord to an outside j box on each then go thru the wall directly to a panel on each. This means their will be a 3 ph 480v panel and a 240v single phase panel.

From the 480v panel I will power 3 pieces of equipment.
From the 240v panel I will power lights and outlets.

What are the requirements for a code install. Im concerned about having 2 sources of power....yet their still comming from the same generator. Both of the sources will have twist lock plugs to disconnect power if needed.

Am I missing any show stoppers here?

My other option that is very costly:
Get a 480v 3ph to 120/208 3ph delta wye step down xfmr and power a single panel for everything.....equipment and lights/outlets.

All of the equipment is now setup for 208v 3ph but I plan to replace starters and re wire motors to support 480v if I go that route.

Thanks in advance

I don't really see any major issues, code allows two services to a building if two different voltages are needed, and it sounds like everything will be grouped together.

Thats what I was thinking. Do you see any issue using flexable cord approx 7ft long to each connection on the generator. I wont terminate the so cord in the panel. I will install a jbox for each feed outside the building and splice to thhn to enter the panels.

Does this sound like the right way to you or is their an easier method?

The only problem may be if it is in a residential zone, there may be a problem with the noise we have many homeowners that have pool pump noise issues, so permits and location and placement of the gen may be an issue.

Im trying to find a 480 to 208/120 at the right price. This would mean only one feed pluged into the 480v connection on the gen and only one panel. This 208 3 ph panel can feed everything in the barn without rewiring the equipment and starter coils.
