When using a whole house generator with a automatic transfer switch, is a service disconnect required between the meter and the transfer switch? If transfer switch is service entrance rated does this change anything.

Re: Generator Transfer Switch

If the transfer switch is rated for service use it should be considered the disconnect also since it will have 3 positions.
1) Utility
2) Off
3) Generator

Re: Generator Transfer Switch

Exactly!

Although, Scottau didn't say if his Transfer switch is rated for service use!

hmmm?

Re: Generator Transfer Switch

If the transfer switch is service rated and contains overcurrent protection, no disconnect necessary. If it doesn't contain overcurrent protection, you would either need a disconnect with overcurrent protection ahead of it or you could install your protection downstream from the transfer switch "immediately adjacent" to it. This all assumes that the transfer switch can be disconnected manually from both supplies.

Re: Generator Transfer Switch

Must it be an over-current device, or merely a disconnect?

Okay, it looks like you mentioned this after the OR.

Re: Generator Transfer Switch

From a servicing and testing standpoint, I would recommend a service disconnect before the ATS.

Re: Generator Transfer Switch

Yes I did say the switch was service rated. Can anybody give code reference with their reply??
Do I need overcurrent protection at this point?

Re: Generator Transfer Switch

Scottau,

445.18 Generator shall be equipped with a disconnect.

702.6 Transfer equipment must be suitable for intended use.

You should read both of these short articles yourself.

I don't see where additional disconnects/equipment are needed.

Re: Generator Transfer Switch

The issue is not between the generator and the transfer switch, but between the meter and the transfer switch. Article 230 section V and VII.
From what I have been able to find out in this situation the transfer switch can be used as a service disconnect only if it is service rated and has overload protection, otherwise I will need an additional service disconnect.

Re: Generator Transfer Switch

scottau,

You are correct in that the x-fer switch has to be marked correctly to be used as a service disconnect, 230.70(B) and (c).

Also see 230.91 for location of service overcurrent device.

If your x-fer switch meets these criteria it can be considered as the service disconnect.

I believe that mvannevel answered the question quite well.
