Can anyone advise on where the code requirement is for a 20ft separation between the utility transformer and the life safety generator is located? I have reviewed the NEC, NFPA 110 & the IBC but cannot find it.

Thanks.

I sounds like a "policy". Who is asking for the separation? The utility or the AHJ?
Good questions! You will not find the answer in the NESC either (the Code that covers the electric utilities).

It would help if we knew where you were so the question could be answered better.

In MA, National Grid has the Green Book.
Generators with fuel are required to be 20' away or a wall must be built between the transformer and the generator.

310. Customer?s Emergency Standby Generator
...Customer?s on-site generator and fuel storage are often
located adjacent to Company pad-mounted transformers
for ease in using the same trench to the electrical room.
The Company requires protection between the transformer
and the generator fuel storage unit, by either a twenty (20)
foot separation or a masonry wall. This wall should be
erected parallel to and located three (3) feet from one side
of the pad-mounted transformer foundation. The wall
should be six (6) feet high and extend approximately three
(3) feet beyond each end of the transformer foundation...
