Generator Voltage Drop

Howdy partners,

I just looked at a job today. There is a diesel generator that serves as backup power. They want to move the generator about 500' due to how loud it is. It is only a 10KW generator, so my calculations put me at 1 AWG wire should be sufficient.

My question is: are there any adjustment factors for this since the source is a generator, or is it still the same calculation and principle?

Thanks, dudes and/or dudettes.

There is no special adjustments if the source is a generator. The generator itself may introduce voltage drop, depending on how good its regulation is.

I've got to ask: you are describing an installation that will use thousands of dollars of wire and labor. Wouldn't a proper generator enclosure make more sense?

I totally agree here..

Hey Winnie, thanks for the help.
Yeah, this is a clubhouse for fly fishing. I agree, the cost will be pretty high just to move this thing. But they are getting a new generator and keeping the old one, so they will be building a new shed large enough for both of them.

I am not sure what a proper generator enclosure would look like.
