If you have legally required or emergency generators, the requirements for running are in NFPA 110.
A emergency generator is required to be run 30 minutes once a month. However, running a generator under no load, esp a diesel generator creates wet stacking and the unburned diesel can dilute the oil.
Many generators have the exercise timer set to run - typically unloaded - once a week.
If this is the case, then you should load bank the generator to 75% or so, once a year.
And a couple of times a year, turn off the main disconnect to do a "plugs out" test.
