On a residential back up generator. When comming of the utility meter do you need to provide a disconnect before the automatic transfer switch?

If the transfer switch is listed as suitable for use as service equipment, a disconnecting means is generally not required. Consult the NFPA 110 for exact requirements for standby systems.

But remember, that even where the transfer switch is service rated, that the service overcurrent protection must be "located immediately adjacent thereto", unless the overcurrent protection is in the transfer switch itself. 230.91
