We are installing a 60KW genset. 3 phase 4 wire 208 volt with underground conduit from genset to inside a commercial building and into an ATS. I calculated the output to be 167 amps. there will be a circuit breaker on the genset outside (factory installed on unit). The neutral will not be switched in the ATS so this will not be a separately derived system.

My question is, does the copper power conductors from the generator to the ATS need to be sized 125% of the rated output of generator (4/0 copper THWN) or will 3/0 THWN be compliant. The generator will power general lighting, receptacles, heating systems and IT department.

Thank you.

The FLA for the generator is actually 208A, if the power factor was low (0.8). Use the 250A output breaker and 250kCMIL wire.
You need a method to protect the wire, so the breaker choice is important.
