Genset Wiring.

Hello All,

I have browsed this forum frequently in the past, but first time posting. I am not an electrician, but have picked up a few things here and there. I will not be doing this install, but I'd like to buy the equipment and have it all sitting there, and call someone to open the genset.

I got my hands on a Olympian 50 kw Genset for next to nothing. My idea is to use this as a power supply for the shop, as I have some 480v 3 phase welders and plasmas (again, old stuff, but cheap for playing in the shop) and the cost to get 480 to the shop is out of the question as this is for fun, not to make money.

The genset rating tag says its 480/277 3 phase. I have some 220 v stuff (construction heater, tig, plasma) , 120v ( grinders, drills, hand tools) stuff and the 480v welders (under the rating of genset) . Already have a 480v panel that came with it.

Now, I know I can't ask the genset to do everything I need all at once (she won't suffer that many pixies) , but to get the 220 and 120, would I be better off to get 1 or 2 VFD's and just dial the voltages back and pull off them? Thinking this way I have an unlimited potential for upgrades (if I need more 220, I could just get the wiring changed after the vfd or if some 600v stuff comes around) I can pick some 10hp rated VFD's for about 1500 all in..

Or should I get 2 transformers, which are double the cost, plus shipping, so 3 times the cost..

Any help is appreciated.
