GFCI & 517

I'm a little weak in article 517.

As I see it, if there's a basin in a patient care room, we need to have GFCI protection of a receptacle near that basin per 517.20 (A). (If interruption can be tolerated, blah, blah, blah . . .)

However, if there's a basin *and* a toilet in the patient care room, we don't need GFCI protection at the receptacle near the basin per 517.21.

Maybe I'm not fully appreciating the significance of the phrase, "Critical care area" in 517.21?

Is this correct? Why would the presence of a toilet negate the need for GFCI protection?

Re: GFCI & 517

A sink is not make a location "Wet". A "wet" location has to have standing water as a common occurance. A lot of sinks in healthcare facilities don't have stoppers, so they don't even hold water.

I don't believe 517.20 specifies a basin. A basin in and of it's self is not a "wet location".
Location, Wet. Installations under ground or in concrete slabs or masonry in direct contact with the earth; in locations subject to saturation with water or other liquids, such as vehicle washing areas; and in unprotected locations exposed to weather.
