GFCI Commercial Overhead Door Wet Area

We have several existing commercial facilities where vehicle washing is performed routinely in the immedaite area and there is an overhead door. The outlets in the area are GFCI-protected, but recently a question came up if the overhead door opener circuit needs a GFCI breaker? The opener is not plugged into a ceiling outlet, it's a motorized system hard wired directly into the electrical system at the panel box. We're currently considering it as a best-practice for future facility designs, but are there any code reference requirements? All help is appreciated.

That is a good way to put it, and a good idea. But the NEC is not concerned with "good practices." Its scope is limited to the minimum requirements for a safe installation.

No. GFCI requirements apply only to certain receptacle outlets. Reference article 210.8.
