GFCI for Bathroom to sub-panel

Are there any restrictions on GFCI circuits to sub-panels for bathrooms? My electrician friend is telling me that bathroom circuit must go back to the main panel and cannot go to a sub panel. I looked for information on this, but could not find any code reference to this?

Did you ask your friend why he thinks that there is a need to only run the circuit from the service panel? Many homes don't even have branch circuit CB's at their service disconnect. If the service disconnect is on the outside of the house and feeds the panel inside of the house, the panel on the inside is now a subpanel.

Keep him as a friend but don't use his electrical advice. ;) There is a problem in our trade that even 1 year helpers call themself electricians.

It always amazes me when I have conversations with a bunch of electricians on a job. They all seem to have their own versions of what I call the electrical urban legend. They know someone who did something and found out it was incorrect because their other friends brother had a similar problem on another job. Like Jeff said, ask for a code reference and then laugh when they can't find one.

I keep my code book in my truck.That way when a fellow worker says something is a code i am ready for the "i don't have my code book with me "Here is mine ,now show me.
