Hi,

My hot tub keeps tripping after 12 years of use. I'm thinking it's the GFCI gone bad. Unfortunately it's a CH 2 pole 50 amp (GFTCB250) and they are on national backorder. The only options I can think of are to put a GFCI in the main panel (Sqaure D) and replace the GFCI at the disconnect with a standard breaker but I'm not sure if that can be done. The other option is to replace the entire disconnect with a new one that has a GFCI. Would love to hear any thoughts or ideas.

TIA.

It’s likely the GFCI is doing its job and not defective. Get a qualified electrician to trouble shoot your hot tub or a fatal shock could occur. Since you have no occupation listed we can offer no other assistance. Proceed at your own risk.

I’ll just add that after 12 years, it’s likely that your heater elements have deteriorated and are leaking electricity into the water, so the GFCI breaker is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Heating elements on hot tubs last 7-10 years, you got your money’s worth. They can be replaced, but call a hot tub service company. I tried doing my own since I’m an electrician, I would never do it again. It’s more of a plumbing job than an electrical one.
