Are GFCI's required for convenience receptacles in a machine shop? We are providing 5-20 receptacles at every tool (mill, lathe, press, etc...) location and bench area for convenience power for hand tools, lamps etc. Similar for what we would do for commercial garage. For commercial garages, 511.12 states where GFCI's are required. While the receptacles for a machine shop would serve similar purposes (electrical hand tools, portable lighting), I don't see anywhere in the code where GFCI's are required for a machine shop. It would be perhaps good safety practice to give the option to the client, but I don't see an actual NEC requirement for them. Please advise if I am incorrect in this assessment. Thanks.

We did a small machine shop a few years ago with recepts located similar to yours. GFCIs were not required by code but the insurers were very happy. Put a GFCI next to each machine if your worried about taking out the neighbor if or when one trips.

I grow weary about the hand wringing over expense of GFCI protection. A million dollars for machines and building, but $1500 for GFCIs is too much? Rant over.

That said some equipment will not work on GFCI protected outlets. You will have to deal with it somehow.
