NEC calls for GFCI's in garages unless... for dedicated space of fixed appliance. Does the garage outlet with sprinkler timer mounted next to it and the outlet installed next to the garage watersofener loop meet this requirement? These appliances should not be on GFCI's for obvious reasons.

I seen this often and while the danger is there ,they do not require gfci.
What happens when on the print it says FREEZER OUTLET but they never buy one? now we have a non gfci receptacle in a garage. Not good but it will pass inspection and will get used.

Re: GFCI-garage locations

Is there any reason not to use a GFCI on a circuit used by an electronic sprinkler controller? It won't cause the GFCI to trip will it? I just did some garage work for some people I know and the existing recep used by the controller was non-GFCI. It is now though. I took the oppurtunity to make some changes to the existing homeownered additions. A beautiful sight: #14 added to a 20A circuit, unsafe routing of NM-B, extension cords (smashed by boxes in the attic) feeding the second garage door opener, the list goes on. I told them they should consider themselves lucky that one of the receps stopped working, that way they could have it wired by a pro.

In our home, there is a recep over a 15" wide kitchen counter top that is not GFCI protected. I'm not sure how it passed (1994 built home), as it shouldn't be for a microwave. The home has a built in micro/hood over the range. We currently have a toaster plugged in at the location. I think I'll GFCI protect the outlet.

ROYTA: i find this kind of funny. You gfci an outlet that doesn't need protected and yet your own house has one that needs to be.Does this have anything to do with collecting from yourself LOL

I don't know about where you live but in Fl we have water restrictions and times and days your allowed to water lawns, miss them and you get a fine. While newer systems have bat. back ups for the clock some older ones don't.If that was a single outlet for the sprinkler you might end up with a free service call if it ever trips. While unlikely to trip because of the transformer it is not uncommon to have them trip from lightning

Our AHJ`S require all non gfci protected single receptacles in a garage to be labeled appliance use only.So now in addition to my usual tools in my tool bag I have a Dymo electronic labeling machine.

Allen just what code does he used to enforce that?
Yes sounds like good idea but will mr homeowner understand what it means ?He might think his saw or drill to be an appliance.See article 100
How about NON GFCI or NO GFCI PROTECTION.
He is making up his own codes.
