gfci locations and dates

Does anybody know the date when the requirement for all kitchen countertop outlets to be gfci protected came into force. This is mentioned in the 2003 NEC, but i have been told that this requirement dates back to 1996. Thanks.

Yes you are correct, the 1996 edition. Before that, only the ones located within 6' of the sink required gfci protection.
