2014 code article 210.8 B8 states GFCI protection for receptacles are required in a garage. Definition of a garage: in which self propelled vehicles are kept, used, etc. Meaning " forklifts" Does this mean we need to install GFCI in warehouses, machine shops,
or any other industry where forklifts are used. what if the forklifts are only used on the loading docks but there are no walls separating this space from other spaces. The NFPA Even told me this is a grey area. short answer: Call the AHJ. Is It also true that GFCI protection is not needed where personnel are engaged in manufacturing with power tools Etc. Is There a Clear answer as to where GFCI are needed in other than dwelling ?

In a mechanical room with stored liquids we were told gfci were not required in rooms like this where acess and utilization of equipment and liquids would be done by qualified personnel and not general public. Just my experience

The NEC code is the BARE minimum requirements. It is not a design manual. Going above and beyond code is a wise choice at minimal cost for some situations. (example:installing GFCI's when the situation warrants it) Remember it is your customers money that you are spending.

2014 - 210.8(B)(8) says: "Garages, service bays, and similar areas other than vehicle exhibition halls and showrooms"

The wording "similar areas" leaves this pretty wide open regardless of any definition of "garage". (the last part exempting exhibition halls and showrooms was added to 2014)
