GFCI other than dwelling units

Hello all,

There seems to be a lack of agreement among the people that I communicate with on this issue. Looking at installing a new circuit in an existing commercial kitchen for a new grill. 30 amp 3 phase cord and plug, twist lock, 208 volt. By the way I understand the code, it is less than 100 amps to ground 3 phase, less than 150 volts to ground. GFI is required. Is there a way around this I am unaware of ?

TIA

Casey

I'm not trying to argue, just trying to be exhaustive lol. So, a knife handle disconnect doesn't count as "contact device", "direct connection of a corresponding contact device"? I think the hardwired case can be disputed. 🤔

A disconnect is not installed at the receptacle outlet. "contact device installed at the outlet"

IMO, under the '23 Code it would require GFCI protection with any wiring method based on 210.8(D) if it's considered a counter mounter cooking unit.

Which NEC edition applies as that potentially changes the answer to your question?

As mentioned in 2023 all the appliances in 210.8(D) require GFCI protection in any occupancy type whether cord and plug connected or direct connected. Some of them may not required GFCI protection prior to 2023 NEC unless they were cord and plug connected.
