Is this normal?when i turn the breaker back on and reset the gfci outlet it works fine.Could it have something to do with something plugged in to it when i turned of the breaker?Doesn't seem like a big deal but when your leaving the customer's house and you get a call a 15 minutes later saying her garage door won't close. That sucked.

The opener certainly has enough constantly-powered electronics in it to be considered, but there should be no significant current flow to the EGC.

Have you tried unplugging it, and/or anything else on the circuit? Remember to make only one change at a time when troubleshooting.

It is for an old generation of GFCI's. Some of the real old one's in a few brands would trip after power failure. At 100 bucks or more a pop to the customer, it's hard to convince them to replace an otherwise working GFCI for this reason alone.

What if the GD opener tied into a JB instead of being plugged?

If you cut the cord end off, that would void the UL listing and therefore violate code (110.3(b)). IMHSO

Yeah, like the "overhead door company" brand openers that just get hardwired? That would not require GFCI protection, so it seems.

I recently installed two Genie openers which included instructions on hardwiring. I don't remember if you were to cut the plug off, or replace the entire cord.
