WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF INSTALLING A 3 PHASE SERVICE FOR A SUBMERSIBLE FOUNTAIN PUMP. THIS PUMP WILL BE INSTALLED IN A POND. ARTICLE 680 IS SPECIFIC IN STATING ALL SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS INSTALLED IN A FOUNTAIN MUST HAVE GFCI PROTECTION. WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LOCATE A MANUFACTURER WHO CAN FURNISH A 3 PHASE BREAKER FOR THIS TYPE OF INSTALLATION. DOES THE INSTALLATION OF A SUBMERSIBLE PUMP IN A POND MEET THE DEFINITION OF A FOUNTAIN? HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH PROVIDING 3 PHASE GFCI PROTECTION TO A FOUNTAIN PUMP?

Re: GFCI PROTECTION FOR 3 PHASE SUBMERSIBLE PUMP

I'm not aware of any 3 phase ground fault protective devices that provide a 5 mA ground fault trip. There are a number of 3 phase 30 mA ground fault trip devices available, but they do not meet the requirement of 690.51(A).
