GFCI Protection for Jacuzzi Bathtub

A friend of mine recently discovered while working in the attic of his house that the pump motor for his jacuzzi pump was installed incorrectly. Aside from the fact the pump was supported only by the PVC water pipe he found that the pump was not grounded. Also the circuit breaker that feeds the pump was not a GFCI type circuit breaker. The panel was labeled GFI breaker for Jacuzzi Pump.
Does this motor need to be GFCI protected? Could it possibly suffer from nuisance trips if it was?
Any help would be appreciated.

680.71 Covers about all of it from the Code perspective. It has been required about everywhere I have worked or inspected in. To my knowledge nusinance tripping is a rare occurance.
