Does it matter if I install a gfci breaker for a pool pump in the main panel or 100' away in an outdoor load center? The only electrical equipment connected will be a 240volt pool pump motor.
I usually see a standard breaker in the main panel and the gfci in the load center at the pool pump.

No matter.

I put std in main, GFI in sub or spa panel. <-- I recommend this way.

Thanks for the input - I wondered about distance. I have concerns that the underground feeder may not be in the best of shape and thought that installing the gfci at the main panel would also help provide additional safety. Whoever originally installed the electrical service for the pool did just about everything wrong that they could - 3 wire feeder (black, red, white, no eq ground) serving the 240v pool pump as well as pole lights and receptacles with no gfci protection at all. All of this controlled by a 120v spst timeclock. I disconnected the lights/receptacles at outdoor load center and figured that if I put the gfci in the main panel, then if someone tried to reconnect the 120v loads, that they would immediately throw the gfci.

Sorry for being so long winded... ?

Pool area. If it's in the main and it trips, here goes the thousand phone calls to get the garage door code or a key to get into the house to re-set it. This is a joy when customers are away on vacation. Been there.

If it's at the pool equipment, you always have access.

Very good argument for pool area. I had not considered accessibility. In this case the main panel is accessible through a door that does not lock.

Can anyone think of a reason that a nf disconnect at pool area with gfci breaker at main panel that would make this installation illegal?

Sorry to beat a dead horse. I normally would install gfci protection in the load center but my spidey sense keeps telling me to do it differently here.

In AZ, many many mains are mounted to the exterior of the home :eek:hmy:. Almost all new home builds for past ~15-20yrs has been this way.

I am wondering though, this wire pull is a new pull? If so how did it pass inspection without an insulated EGC?
