Hello All,

My question is:

Does a vending machine plugged into an outdoor receptacle require the outlet or circuit to be GFCI protected (210.8 personnel protection outside receptacle) AND the vending machine itself to comply with one of the acceptable GFCI methods listed in 422.5 like a GFCI cord/plug?

I’m in California

210.8(B) has required outside receptacles to have GFCI protection for a very long time. The fact that the vending machine has its own GFCI protection does not change the requirement for the outside receptacle to have GFCI protection.

Thats exactly what I thought. I could not get the electrical contractor to understand this. He was saying the installation was compliant because the vending machine had its own GFCI cord. I couldn’t get him to understand that it was two different issues and the outside receptacle needed to have the GFCI protection. Thanks for the response!
