Re: GFCI shared neutral

12/3 NM not a problem on the line side of a GFCI and if the loads plug in separately, like a pump and heater. They also make a face-less type that can be used as a disconnect and GFCI protection which can be mounted outside the tub with receptacles mounted under the tub to plug in to. This is the way we do it.

Re: GFCI shared neutral

No you will have to split the 12/3 into two circuits ran to each one to the line side of the face-less GFCI. then two receptacles from the load side. one from each one. They (face-less GFCI) will have Line and Load terminals on the back just like a GFCI receptacle but they don't have the receptacle openings in the front, just the Line/Load connections on the back.

Re: GFCI shared neutral

The blank face GFCI?s are switch rated so they can be used as a controller but not a disconnect. The receptacle at the tub will serve as the disconnect. If the GFCI protection is going to be at the tub I see no reason to use the faceless GFCI?s, just use standard receptacle GFCI?s. We frequently locate the blank face GFCI?s for tubs in a remote place such as the walk-in closet so the homeowners have easier access to it.

If the face-less GFCI has a switch rating and a switch is allowed to be a disconnect, Where is it in the NEC that it can't be used as a disconnect?

I had an inspector tell ma that Hydromassage bathtubs are not required to have a disconnect as 680.70 says that only part VII applies, and other parts are not enforceable?

680.70 General.
Hydromassage bathtubs as defined in 680.2 shall comply with Part VII of this article. They shall not be required to comply with other parts of this article.
I'm trying to learn when we should ingnore wording and when it does apply?

Re: GFCI shared neutral

A GFCI will not trip if it is not energized. I don?t see how a switch that requires electricity to operate can be an approved disconnecting means. What if you want to service the motor the GFCI is feeding during a power failure?

That's strange. The ones we use wont reset when the power is off but will still trip. I think they have a capacitor in them that holds them in until the power is restored but will still trip?

I'll have to check this again as I have never thought about it this way.
