Where in the code does it say that in commercial restaurants cooking area that GFIC protection must be a breaker.

More of an access thing is my thought. As mentioned, can't access most of them for appliances and equipment everywhere.

210.8 says the GFCI must be readily accessible.

Then there is the fact that for other than 5-15 and 5-20 receptacle types you will generally need a GFCI breaker anyway as those two are about the only commonly available receptacle types.

Thanks , I was thinking long those same lines. Readily accessible. Because of the shortage and lack of availability of GFIC breakers the contractor is putting all theses GFIC receptacles in the electrical room. I don't see how this meets the definition of readily accessible.

Why not? Is there something about the electrical room that does not meet the Article 100 definition of readily accessible?

I agree with you that they are accessible as the breakers but this is a food hall with eight different vendors . If these are for Equipment that isn't easy to move wouldn't make more sense to locate them near the equipment.

Design choice, not a code requirement.

If close but not easy to get to to reset is it really a better thing?

I myself have some issue with the "readily accessible" requirement as it is, but would have no problem with some sort of lesser "easily accessible" requirement here, but don't ask me to set the definition for it either, it likely to end up being a can of worms type of definition that nobody can agree on exactly what it means or doesn't mean.

Then there is the issue of if the gfci popped, what caused it? Not really that normal of an occurrence unless there is a problem with the appliance. Easy accessibility is not really a problem.

Well you probably don't want to have to move a very heavy appliance, unless it is on wheels and is easy to move, just to take a look to see if the GFCI behind it is still set or tripped regardless of what code might say.
