Hi, I've always had no trouble having a gfi outlet working properly in a house with no ground. And the one I installed does test properly, but the one regular outlet down stream does not. Is this a problem you have? I cannot just install another gfi because it is for an overhead door and not therefore accessible. Thank you

If the one down stream is not testing propely then you have wired the GFCI receptacle wrong or it's a bad receptacle. Pull the GFCI receptacle and see if there is feed through when the receptacle is tripped.

+1 In fact some of the testers will tell you not to use if a ground is not present.
If you want to know why, try pressing test button (on a plug in tester) while holding onto a metal weatherproof cover lid when there is no equipment ground present. If that doesn't do anything for you take off your shoes or kneel on wet soil while trying again. OR research why you shouldn't do that if it doesn't easily occur to you why.
