What are the NEC requirements for electrical outlets that a swimming pool pump / filter and motor are plugged into? In this case a small motel had a pump room located a good distance away from the pool but it had regular outlet instead of a GFI. My thoughts is that since water is running through pump system a GFI would be required.

Thoughts and refernce points appreciated!

What size is the motor? What year was the motor installed etc....Look at 680.22(B)

At one time , I think before the 2005 NEC, GFCI was not required for pool pumps. Also the amps and volts may also be exempt.

Also be aware that all pool pumps manufactured on or after 5/28/2011 must be marked as requiring GFCI protection or identified as such in the installation instructions per the latest ANSI/ UL 1081 update.

This of course does not apply to any pumps installed or purchased prior to the date above...
