GFI Outlet won't reset

I have a GFI outlet in the kitchen that tripped. The reset button does not reset. I replaced the receptacle with another GFI receptacle and the problem persists.

Any ideas on what is causing the ground fault? There were no power outages or surges that I'm aware of. Just seemed to stop working for no reason. The breaker is fine, the refrigerator is connected to this circuit from a separate wire and is on and running fine.

Could be a neutral to ground connection downstream of the receptacle. Check it with your meter.

True. I sometimes find that if the screwdriver is not dead center of reset it will not engage.

Yes and it may take several attempts for it to reset making it seem like it's defective.

If it still won't reset, disconnect the load wires and try again.

I can't see my wife being able to reset them.

I replaced the receptacle with another GFI receptacle and the problem persists.

As I have said before, replacing parts is a terrible troubleshooting method.

There may be two problems here.
1. The old GFCI died
2. The new GFCI was not wired correctly

If the line and load conductors are reversed, the GFCI won't set.

In any way.
Line and load wires reversed or 1 line wire, 1 load wire on line side of receptacle or
vice versa. My nephew did this.

I've been guilty of overlooking the obvious.

Or there is a ground fault downstream of the GFI that has not been corrected.
