So as usual my code book is in my office.
Going over a bath room install with my helper, we have 3 recessed lights in a bath room. 1 in the open shower area 1 halfway over the tub and 1 by the door. He asked me if the lights have to be gfi protected.I told him no, but I haven't been down this road in a couple yrs. The last time I remember, as long as I had a shower trim on the fixture they didnt have to be gfi protected. And if I did gfi protect them it would be a building code violation. I remember this conversation with an inspector yrs ago. like i said no code book with me tonight so I figured I would goto the next best thing..............

I have only heard of one brand that required gfci protection for a recessed can over a shower. All the usually brands do not require it-- Halo, Juno etc. Someone posted a pic of a brand that req. it but I can't remember.
