If a circuit is required to have a gfi receptacle and there are more than one receptacles in the circuit, do they all have to be gfis or can just the first one be?

Re: GFI receptacles

All that are located in a location outlined in 210.8 are required to be GFCI protected.

Example, I install an outside receptacle on the front of a home from the living room circuit, only the outside receptacle is required to be GFCI protected.

Re: GFI receptacles

If all the receptacles are on the same circuit and the first receptacle is GFI, then wouldn't all the receptacles be GFI protacted?

Re: GFI receptacles

GFCI receptacles have In and Out terminals, so if you bring the power to the In terminals of the GFCI and continue the circuit from the Out terminals, you can use standard 3-prong receptacles for the rest of the circuit. For example, on the kitchen countertop receptacles, which require 2-small appliance branch circuits and GFCI protection, you should see 2 GFCI plugs with the rest being standard.

Re: GFI receptacles

Thank you. That's what I thought. I just wanted to verify it with someone. Thanks again.

Re: GFI receptacles

Unlike the rule for AFCIs in dwelling unit bedrooms, you don't need to protect an entire circuit with a GFCI device. It is only the individual outlets that require GFCI protection. So look at the list that Mike pointed out. Those outlets require GFCI. If you are permitted to place any other receptacles on the same circuit, the other receptacles do not require GFCI protection.

Re: GFI receptacles

Standard practice in Florida put the GFCI in the garage and from the load side wire the bathroom lights and outlets off the same circuit

Even if this were legal it would be a terrible design.

Re: GFI receptacles

K-Mark and Straps, you need to see the following.

Bathroom receptacles need to be on their own circuit 210.11(C)(3).

You need at least 2 circuits in the kitchen (dedicated to the areas outlined in 210.52(B)), 210.11(C)(1). Any receptacles serving countertops in kitchens and dining rooms require GFI protection (210.8).

Under the 2005, if a washing machine receptacle is within 6' of a sink, it needs to be GFI protected (210.8) and either way, needs to be on it's own circuit (210.11(C)(2), 210.52(F)).

You can begin to daisy-chain GFI-protected outlets after those dedicated circuits are taken care of. For example, the required GFI receptacle in the garage (210.52(G)) frequently protects the required outside outlets (210.52(E)) in the homes I wire.

Re: GFI receptacles

On those houses where gfi in garage feeds bath plugs, it always seems like thats the one behind a mountain of shelving and junk, when I am called to the house because the bath plugs are dead. Same deal for outside "dead" receptacle outlets fed off of a garage gfi outlet. You know the son of a gun is there, but you can't even see it.

Re: GFI receptacles

Don`t you love the old man that covers the walls in his garage with peg board and to get at a gfci device you have to move 1/2 the 1960`s and part of the 80`s and 90`s stuff he has collected and when asked where the gfci device is he always points to the most cluttered part of a garage.
As to bath coming off the wp or any other ct. wasn`t that like 96 cycle that allowed that?
If that was still allowed I would go back to putting all the bares in my cordless and using the 4/0 lug to land them ;) Ok a show of hands who remember when that was allowed ????? anybody??

Re: GFI receptacles

The only time it wasn't allowed by me is when I first started using a cordless and either the clutch or my finger hung on just a wee too long.

Re: GFI receptacles

A bath gfci has to stay within that bath alone and can operate all receps/lights. in that bathroom or make a loop from bath to bath these stay seperate butit is receps only when looping.
